Susan Yalevich came to Cranbrook last week to review the second year students thesis work in the Cranbrook museum. A Cranbrook Alum, she was schooled in painting but has become a design scholar and teacher at Parsons. She gave a great lecture the night before entitled, “Petrified Curtains, Animate Architecture”, which looked at the use and influence of textiles in architecture over many hundreds of years to the present moment.
Leading the review the next day, Susan had much to say about everyone’s work. She was very good at getting to the essence of everyone’s project. Just what one would hope for for their last critique at Cranbrook. Thanks for your time and insight, Susan!
The Graduate Degree Exhibition was quite a visual cacophony (in a good way). Many artists went BIG. Each artist or designer is given an 8′x8′ space to show their work. The only height limitation in the museum’s ceiling. So naturally, many decided to take advantage of this and build to the ceiling. No one in 3D did, however. And for that reason I wish 3D had been able to occupy a larger collective footprint to show off their work. Almost everyone had multiple pieces that were beautifully composed. I was really surprised about how wide ranging the work of the second year students was! I think this is one of the virtues of our department- many different aspects of contemporary design can be explored. Kudos to all of the 2nd years for an excellent showing!
Here are a few images of the Dome Light with difference dial switches. I am still redesigning the dials so that they are as minimal as possible but still work well rotated with only a finger.

It has become apparent to me that the current design of the Pattern Chair will be too flexible if the 90 degree bends of the seat and back are not braced in some way. To mitigate this effect, I have changed the panels in the back and added a corner bracket. The current renderings show both of these new details.

We were told yesterday that Maaike Evers of Mike & Maaike will be coming by Wednesday to show us some of their work and chat with us a bit. I really love their work and am excited to be able to meet her. One of the things I really appreciate about Cranbrook is how many great designers and artists visit every year.
