I recently had a crit for a light which exists somewhere between a task light and a sculptural desk light. I designed it around a ring shaped LED. I wanted to keep the profile as thin as possible with the idea that sculpturally it would read as a line drawing or pen and ink drawing. I chose to critique it early in the dev process because I wanted to hear what others had to say about whether more articulation was needed for it to be a more convincing task light or if I should explore the sculptural component more and let go of the task light functionality. General consensus was that the light would work best as a sculptural desk light. It was suggested that I look at artists like Calder for inspiration. Other suggested that I look at ways to change the line weight. There was a lot of good discussion about the light which lets me know that I am onto something. Hopefully I can produce something perfect by the end of the semester…
