I have not been entirely happy with the form that I gave to the head of the light in the first iteration. So I’ve gone back to refine it a bit more and give it a sleeker form. I think that it makes the light look less top-heavy. I think I should make the head even smaller…more to come as far as that is concerned.
The first design change looked like this:
Here is a close up of the head:
The immediate issue with this is the connection point between the tubing and the components of the light head. It would be better to have a solid piece of wood with a hole drilled into it connected to the tubing. It is easier to get hardware in there to hold these components together better. I changed the top part of the light head to look like this:
I added little handles and chose a different color for the tube that rotates. Color in this way, speaks to function.
Work now will involve figuring out how to connect the housing together inside for the light head which will be made out of wood (Walnut?) or MDF and acrylic of some sort of other plastic (ideally one that can be molded and is translucent). I also need to look at different types of LED light components.
If I use MDF, I will need the kind that can be powder coated so that color is consistent between parts.
Here I added a fillet towards the back of the light head where the plastic meets the wood:
