Continuing with the design ideas from the Dome Light, as well as inspiration from Barber Osgerby’s amazingly beautiful Lanterne Marine vases, I am working on a table lamp that is essentially a cylinder with an aluminum armature and glass shade. The light switch will use the same dimmer dial idea as the Dome light but will be flush with the base except for two raised buttons on opposite sides from one another, that one pinches with thumb and middle finger to rotate. This idea was the result of fumbling for the a traditional light switch on my bedside lamp in the middle of the night. Feeling the surface of the Cylinder light for the dial should be much easier.
Initial sketches:
Materials for this light are to still be determined. The armature I think would be best if it were cast in aluminum. Perhaps a plastic might work as well. The dial and the bottom cap would most likely be made from waterjet cut aluminum. The cylinder is the biggest issue. All of the projects I am working on currently (and historically for that matter) are being viewed from the perspective of a designer with little money instead of from a company with manufacturing means and a much larger budget, therefore processes like extruding plastic may or may not be out of my price range for prototyping. And if it is, then I will have to be creative with a convincing alternative. The perfect, glossy surface is really important for this light. So if the base cannot be made of an ABS plastic, then perhaps wood with a great paint job, or metal tubing…

Cylinder Light now 'Armature' Light

Here is the newest approach to what will be known as the light formally known as the Cylinder Light.
Armature redux
Still working at refining the form from what was known as the ‘Cylinder Light’ so that is more slender and elegant. I am trying to stress the relationship between the frame and the glass shade.
